The majority of our volunteers are needed at the food bank itself. About 15% of the food we receive (over 5 million pounds) has special handling requirements. Typically, this involves processing food by sorting, labeling, or repacking it. Example: Repacking 800-pound bins of cereal into family-size portions.

During the harvest season, many farmers find themselves with extra fruits and vegetables on their hands. Instead of letting this nutritious produce go to waste, they call us. Every summer and fall, our volunteers pick — or “glean” — these fruits and vegetables for the food bank. Crops include tomatoes, cherries, and apples.

We would love to have you make blankets from home. You can order any amount of Fleece & Thank You blanket kits, have them shipped right to you (or pick them up from our facility), and ship them back once completed (or drop them off at one of our four drop-off locations).

Work with your company, community group, or family and friends to make blankets! Order FTY blanket kits, meet up at a location of your choice, and make blankets together as a group! We do 400+ events every year, and this is how we are able to provide comfort to so many kids that are sick!

Our warehouse is where all of our behind the scenes work happens! The warehouse is located in Farmington Hills, MI (on the border of Novi and Farmington Hills). Every Monday and Wednesday from 9:30am-4pm, we prep our blanket kits, a process involving cutting fleece, screen pressing patches onto the blankets, and folding them up!

Whether you are in North America, Africa or Asia, we have numerous volunteer opportunities that allow you to serve in the country and community where you live. We want this to be a fun and incredible experience that best fits your talents and our needs.

Help plan the annual Expanding Horizons Gala. The Committee is made up of the Development Team, members of the Board, and donors who plan the Gala’s theme, award nominees, put together the program, auctions, and so much more!
