During the volunteer shift you will be signed in, given an orientation, and assigned a task. Tasks include drying dishes, serving food, carrying trays weighing upwards of 15 pounds, sorting through clothing, serving beverages, washing dishes, taking down tables and chairs, and sweeping and mopping.

Volunteer visitors are matched with a specific client and provide companionship and assistance with reading, completing paperwork, going on walks, shopping, or other tasks as needed. Many volunteers are both drivers and visitors. All volunteers who will directly assist clients are provided the necessary training needed to assist those with vision loss.

Volunteers can assist staff with various tasks during and after the evening intake period at our individual emergency shelters in Quincy and Brockton. Direct Care is ideal for individual adults age 18 and older who feel comfortable interacting directly with the homeless population. Direct Care volunteers assist between the hours of 4 and 6 pm.
