Join us on the beach! Docents provide school children with information about the ocean and conduct related activities on Cabrillo Beach. (April – June)
Docents, “volunteer teachers,” guide children on one-hour tours through the aquarium exhibit hall and give demonstrations on the beach. Provide information and conduct various activities relating to animals and plants of our local tidepools, beaches, kelp forests, islands and open ocean.
Sponsored by Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and the American Cetacean Society-Los Angeles Chapter. You’ll be trained as a naturalist to narrate whale watching trips on boats that depart from local landings December 26 through March observing gray whales, dolphins, sea lions, and birds. Naturalists also give presentations in classrooms.
Assist Education Staff with various activities including SEA SEARCH programs, marine lab/classroom set-up; beach programs like Key to the Sea; Exploration Center; special tours; and providing educational and recreational programs to schools and the public.
Assist in the daily cleaning of exhibits, preparing diets, feeding animals, observing animals, record keeping, providing enrichment and are responsible for keeping all animal areas clean and disinfected. Occasionally public speaking and animal handling is required. (Must be comfortable around turtles, tortoise, snakes and amphibians)
In our animal care program, we have three volunteering levels that interested volunteers can learn and progress through. All volunteers begin working within the animal care program by learning “the basics,” and depending on your desire to learn and the time you have available, you can become proficient and confident in rehabilitation.
