We’re looking for someone to help promote our special events, such as our annual Run for the Ocean 5K and Cruise for a Clean Ocean, beach cleanups and presentations, and work with us on program development.
Coaches work one-on-one to support students throughout the college application process and specifically with writing admissions essays. Volunteers can also help give our students the opportunity to practice interviewing in advance of college admissions or internship interviews or entrance to other academic enrichment programs.
For those with professional-level skills to share, we always need assistance with web design, photography, videography, graphic design and printing.
Event volunteers assist in a variety of ways from planning an event, setting up for an event and other day of tasks, hosting a information session to introduce people to Breakthrough, or help provide meals for teachers and students.
Academic Mentors (AMs) support students who need additional assistance with classwork and homework throughout the school year while providing mentorship to students by offering guidance around non-cognitive skills such as study skills, organization, and self-advocacy. A range of administrative projects arise for which we need additional hands including mailings for families, newsletter distribution, and organizing portfolios of student work to share with interested visitors and supporters. Some projects can be done off-site.
Teams of volunteers (8-20) will join groups of elementary or middle school students (~30) for 2 hours of activities. Our traditional projects include soccer skills stations, nutrition or academic relay races, and can also include field and school clean ups, landscape projects, and more. Boston Scores’ One Hen program teaches students how to create and run real-life small businesses through a micro-loan. With the profits, they repay their loans and support a local charity of their choice. Coaches are required to commit to weekly engagement over an 8- to 12- week season in the fall and/or spring. Volunteers must be free for at least 2 hours on weekdays between 2:30 and 6:00PM.
The program provides soccer, academic support, college exploration, job & career skill building, service projects, and community-building events. Opportunities to work with high schoolers after school, in the evening, or on weekends are available during Boston Public School’s academic year.
