Our mission

To provide one-on-one tutoring and educational advocacy for school-aged children impacted by homelessness. Our vision is to equip these children with the educational tools necessary to achieve success in life and break the cycle of homelessness.

Needs

Become a Tutor

Our volunteer tutors provide focused support to school-aged children experiencing homelessness in schools and shelters throughout Indianapolis. Daytime and evening opportunities available with multiple locations. All backgrounds and education levels encouraged. We provide the training! One hour a week can change a child's life. We are now accepting volunteer tutor applications for the Fall 2021 semester. At this time we feel confident that many of our in-person sessions will resume as normal and other placements may be virtual. Please understand that there will likely be a delay to training and tutor placements as School on Wheels and our partners navigate changing schedules and COVID precautions.

About us

Founded in 2001, School on Wheels is dedicated to providing tutoring and academic support services to school-aged children impacted by homelessness. We bring services to schools, shelters, and transitional living facilities across Indianapolis serving children in grades K-12. Our programs help hundreds of students each year have the academic and emotional support they need to maintain and improve their grades, focus on critical skill building, achieve grade promotion, and build a strong academic foundation despite the trauma and instability of homelessness.
