Description Do you love the written word and appreciate its ability to elevate the human condition? Our volunteer teachers do! IOW conducts weekly writing classes inside L.A. County's juvenile halls. Classes are taught by local writers, artists, educators, and activists. The mission of the Writing Program is to empower incarcerated youth by giving them a safe, non-judgmental place to express themselves and channel their anger and frustration into writing, rather than violence. We are seeking committed, talented and innovative volunteer teachers who know that pen and paper can be tools for personal transformation. Has writing enriched your life? Have you lived or taught in an area where the route to prison was more paved than the route to college? Can you commit an average of 60 - 90 minutes of your time each week? We hope so. Our students are waiting for you. Occurs Wednesday nights or Saturday mornings. Requirements: Driver's License Needed. Background Check. Must be at least 21 (LA Probation Requirement). Attend orientation and training sessions. 60-90 minute weekly or semi-monthly. 1.5-year commitment. Current auto insurance.
